Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Echezeaux Grand Cru 2009

Pinot Noir 100%

The Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, also known as Château de Vosne-Romanée, is a recent creation, founded in 2000 by Viscount Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. However, the family’s presence in Burgundy has much older origins. The Château de Vosne-Romanée was acquired by Louis Liger-Belair in 1815, with an estate that at the time covered 60 hectares, including the famous parcels La Tache, Les Malconsorts, and Les Brulées. Over the years, the property faced several challenges. It was auctioned off in 1933, and later, the two brothers Juste and Count Michel acquired a part, adding one of Vosne’s flagships, La Romanée, the smallest appellation in the French territory, covering only 0.84 hectares. However, the parcels were farmed out to local winegrowers or other Burgundy-based companies. The property saw a renaissance in 2000 with the arrival of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. The new owner terminated the sharecropping contract of Romanée and other parcels with Bouchard and resumed control of bottling (from 2001 to 2005, some of the production was still bottled by Bouchard). The 9-hectare estate is managed according to biodynamic agricultural principles and is now among the best in the Côte de Nuits. The Grand Cru Echézeaux, located in the territory of the Flagey-Echézeaux commune, yields delicate wines of high quality. Perhaps slightly less concentrated than other Vosne Grand Crus, these wines are incredibly sophisticated and precise. The Echézeaux from the Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is a prime example. It releases aromas of cherry and blackberry on the nose while displaying a rather silky and fruity palate. The persistence is extraordinary.
