After the immense success achieved in Piedmont with Barolo and Barbaresco, Angelo Gaja decided to replicate his success in the historic Montalcino valley, embarking on a project where the multifaceted and aristocratic spirit of Sangiovese Grosso could be expressed following Gaja’s conception and typical wine characteristics. His Brunello di Montalcino from the “Rennina” cru, the ancient Roman name for the property meaning “state farm,” is a round, modern, and extremely high-quality representation of Brunello. It is a red wine of absolute complexity and finesse that superbly supports long aging, continuously evolving in the bottle. Gaja’s soft, complex, and powerful interpretation unfolds potent and refined aromas of cherry, violet, plum, blackberry, and currant, complemented by persistent and captivating balsamic notes, hints of toasting, tobacco, chocolate, vanilla, and licorice. The warm, elegant, and enveloping taste moves on a wonderfully velvety and silky tannin, displaying masterful balance and concluding with a long and satisfying persistence. The fermentation takes place in steel tanks, followed by maturation for at least 12 months in barriques and 12 months in large traditional barrels. An additional period of a few months in the bottle is required before the “Rennina” is ready to be commercialized.
