Mazzei, Castello di Fonterutoli, Gran Selezione, Chianti Classico DOCG 2001

Sangiovese 90% e Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Merlot per il 10%

Description

The Gran Selezione Reserve of Castello Fonterutoli is produced in the Fonterutoli Estate, a small medieval village near Castellina in Chianti, about twenty kilometers north of Siena. It is the result of a selection of the best grapes from around fifty different plots, historically known as the most suitable. The vineyards are planted with spurred cordon and Guyot, with a density of 4500-7200 vines per hectare. The warm and ventilated climate, with good temperature variations, and the soils rich in skeletal structure, characterized by the presence of sandstone and shale, have proven perfect for Sangiovese and, more generally, red berries. The Gran Selezione is fundamentally based on Sangiovese (92%), with a small percentage of other grape varieties historically present in the area, such as Malvasia Nera and Colorino (8%). The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with a maceration period of about 15-18 days. The wine then matures for at least 20 months in French oak barrels.
