Vega Sicilia Unico Gran Reserva – Ribera del Duero 1991

Tempranillo 80% and other grapes

Vega Sicilia, considered one of the leading producers of Spanish wines today, owes its foundation to Toribio Lecanda. In 1848, Lecanda acquired the first plots of land in the Ribera del Duero region. Later, his son Eloy, having studied oenology in Bordeaux and returning to Spain, planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Tempranillo, and Pinot Noir vines in his father’s vineyards, turning the property into a viticultural estate. Regarding the origin of the name, some claim it was initially “Vega Santa Cecilia,” which over the years was abbreviated to “Vega Sicilia,” easier both to write and remember. Others argue that the name comes from the area where the estate is located, known since the Middle Ages as Vega Sicilia Carrascal. Acquired by the Álvarez family in 1982, Vega Sicilia today boasts a vineyard spanning 200 hectares, benefiting significantly from the diverse and rich soils influenced by the Duero River. Currently managed by Pablo Álvarez, the winery primarily grows 80% Tempranillo, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec.
