Donatella Colombini, Casato Prime Donne, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 1995

Sangiovese 100%

The Brunello di Montalcino from the Prime Donne project is produced from Sangiovese vineyards of Casato Prime Donne, located in the northern area of Montalcino. Almost always, the grapes come from a small plot called “Ardita,” covering about 2.5 hectares. This vineyard is of extraordinary quality and was planted in 2001 at an altitude of 225 meters above sea level, with a south-facing exposure, on predominantly clayey Pliocene soils. These are “poor” soils where the vines produce very small clusters and berries. Additionally, being “cool” soils and located in the less warm part of the Brunello territory, they allow for long and regular maturation of the grapes. The vines are cultivated with spurred cordon training and organically. The average production is around 55 quintals per hectare, and only in exceptionally favorable years does it rise to 65 quintals. Harvesting is always done manually, and the date is determined by tasting the grapes. Based on the harvest day of the Ardita vineyard, the harvest schedule for the other vineyards of Casato Prime Donne is established.
